Paris [France], August 12: Team India concluded their Paris Olympics campaign with six medals, consisting of one silver and five bronze. The country sent 117 athletes to participate in various events at this prestigious competition.
India finished 71st in the medal standings, while the United States topped the chart with a total of 126 medals.
Manu Bhaker was the first Indian to win a medal at the Paris Olympics, earning bronze in shooting and becoming the first Indian woman to achieve an Olympic shooting medal. She further distinguished herself by winning a second medal, securing bronze in the mixed team 10m air pistol event alongside Sarabjot Singh.
Swapnil Kusale contributed to India's medal count with a bronze in shooting.
The Indian men’s hockey team matched their Tokyo Olympics success with a bronze at Paris 2024, while Neeraj Chopra emerged as the most successful individual Olympian from India by winning a silver in the men’s javelin throw.
Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat became the youngest Olympic medallist from India by clinching bronze in wrestling.
Despite these achievements, India experienced significant disappointments, missing out on six potential medals by narrow margins, with athletes finishing fourth in their respective events. Notable near-misses included Lakshya Sen, Mirabai Chanu, and Manu Bhaker. Additionally, Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification just before a historic final contributed to the overall heartbreak.
Indian athletes competed in 69 medal events across 16 sports at the 2024 Summer Games, including archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, equestrian, golf, hockey, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and tennis.
To date, India has won 41 Olympic medals. Notably, Norman Pritchard’s two silvers in the 1900 Paris Olympics marked India’s first Olympic medals. KD Jadhav was the first individual athlete from independent India to win an Olympic medal, taking bronze in wrestling at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. Weightlifter Karnam Malleswari became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in Sydney 2000.
