Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has announced a major milestone achieved at the Barmer refinery site.
New Delhi [India], August 7: Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted recent progress at the Barmer petroleum refinery project in Rajasthan. On social media platform 'X', the minister shared that a significant milestone has been reached with the installation of a large dome roof for a Propylene Double Wall Tank at the site. This tank, designed to store hazardous chemicals at temperatures up to 200°F, features an inner tank surrounded by a protective outer layer.
Minister Puri noted, "That's the huge dome roof of the Propylene Double Wall Tank being airlifted into place at the Rajasthan Refinery Project at Barmer site. The total weight of the roof, including the suspended deck and balancing weights, is a massive 435MT. This is how India's energy sector is shaping up for the future under the dynamic leadership of PM @narendramodi Ji."
The Greenfield Refinery and Petrochemical Complex at Barmer is being developed by HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Limited (HRRL), a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and the Government of Rajasthan, with stakes of 74% and 26%, respectively. Conceived in 2008 and initially approved in 2013, the project began in 2018 following reconfiguration.
According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the HRRL refinery complex will process 9 MMTPA of crude oil and produce over 2.4 million tons of petrochemicals, significantly reducing the country’s import bills for these materials. This project is expected to be a key industry anchor for western Rajasthan and contribute to India’s goal of reaching a refining capacity of 450 MMTPA by 2030.
The ministry also highlighted that the project will enhance India's self-reliance in petrochemical production, potentially cutting import costs by Rs 26,000 crore out of the current Rs 95,000 crore. Additionally, the project has employed approximately 35,000 workers directly and 100,000 workers indirectly.
