Europa League: Manchester United earns a 3-3 draw with FC Porto.
New Delhi, October 4: Manchester United secured a point against FC Porto in the Europa League thanks to a stoppage-time header from Harry Maguire during a thrilling match on Friday.
Erik ten Hag's team managed to breach the defenses of Porto's captain and goalkeeper Diogo Costa twice, with goals from Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund. However, Porto responded with headers from Pepe and Samu Omorodion before halftime, and Omorodion’s second goal early in the second half seemed to set United up for a disappointing defeat.
Bruno Fernandes received a red card for the second consecutive game, leaving United down to 10 men and looking likely to lose. Nevertheless, they displayed impressive resilience to secure a draw in this competition, following their earlier home match against FC Twente. Substitute Harry Maguire showcased his aerial ability from set pieces, heading in the equalizer in the final moments to end the match 3-3.
The first half was filled with action, with United initially taking the lead after enduring early pressure from Porto. Andre Onana was called into action early, making a save from a shot by Galeno.
Despite some strong defensive efforts from Porto, Ten Hag’s side continued to press, nearly forcing an own goal twice in quick succession. Ze Pedro almost redirected a Rashford cross into his own net, and a subsequent corner resulted in a clearance that bounced off a defender and missed the target.
United doubled their lead shortly after, with Eriksen and Rashford linking up to assist Hojlund. Costa mishandled the Danish striker's shot, allowing the ball to cross the line before being cleared. Rashford remained a threat, forcing Costa into another save with a powerful run and shot.
Porto turned the momentum when Noussair Mazraoui's header toward his own goal required a save from Onana, with Pepe capitalizing on the rebound to cut the deficit. Just seven minutes later, Omorodion equalized with a header from Joao Mario's cross.
Despite losing some momentum, United still created chances, including a deflected shot from Amad that earned a corner and a save from Costa on Casemiro's shot following a touch from Hojlund. Rashford's absence was felt in the second half, and an early scare occurred when Francisco Moura broke through but was denied by Onana.
Porto took the lead when Pepe outpaced Lisandro Martinez to deliver a cross to Omorodion, who netted his second goal. Ten Hag brought on Joshua Zirkzee and Antony, but United struggled with luck as Matthijs de Ligt’s header was saved by Costa, and Casemiro’s header struck Zirkzee.
Fernandes’ dismissal for dangerous play after trying to reach a Garnacho cross left United with ten players. Despite this, Onana's save against Deniz Gul kept United in the match. Garnacho's late effort forced a brilliant save from Costa, but United continued to press. In injury time, Eriksen's corner found Maguire, whose header secured a dramatic draw.
