Squad Analysis of Patna Pirates for the Upcoming Season 11 of Pro Kabaddi League
New Delhi [India], October 8: The Patna Pirates, three-time champions of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL), are determined to reclaim their title after a semi-final exit last season.
As the most successful franchise in PKL history, the Pirates are keen to secure the prestigious trophy again after winning consecutively from Season 3 to 5.
Head coach Narender Redhu, who guided the team to the semi-finals in PKL 10, aims to lead the Pirates to a solid performance and playoff qualification this season.
The team was very active during the Season 11 Player Auction, acquiring over a dozen players to strengthen their roster. Below is an analysis of their strengths and weaknesses ahead of the new season.
Strengths:
One of the main advantages for the Pirates in PKL 11 is the depth of their squad, both in offense and defense. In the Player Auction, they made notable acquisitions, including defender Shubham Shinde, their most expensive signing at Rs 70 lakh, and all-rounder Gurdeep at Rs 59 lakh.
Their raiding squad could be spearheaded by Sudhakar M, who impressed in his debut season with 103 raid points. Sandeep Kumar, another promising raider, aims to surpass his previous tally of 86 raid points from his first season. Other key attackers include Meetu Sharma and Jang Lee, who have accumulated 267 and 471 raid points, respectively.
Defensively, the Pirates have strong options, with Shubham Shinde and Deepak Singh expected to lead the way after accumulating 151 and 61 tackle points in the PKL, respectively. All-rounders Gurdeep and Ankit are also expected to contribute, having recorded 85 and 66 tackle points in their prior seasons.
Weaknesses:
A potential drawback for the Pirates is the absence of quality replacements for last season's top players in both offense and defense. Despite the team's depth, the lack of suitable substitutes for last season's leading raider, Sachin, and former captain Neeraj Kumar could prove problematic.
Moreover, Krishan, the top defender with 78 tackle points last season, will not return, leaving the team without its best raider and defender. With Jang Lee being the only raider on the squad to have played over 60 PKL matches, the team’s lack of experience in attack and defensive vulnerabilities are significant concerns.
Opportunities:
The relative inexperience in both attack and defense may provide opportunities for players to rise to the occasion and take on more responsibility in scoring points. Potential leaders could include Sudhakar M and Sandeep Kumar in the raiding department, along with Shubham Shinde in defense.
Sudhakar M had an impressive debut season, and with Sachin’s departure, much will be expected from him as he steps into a lead raider role. Similarly, Shubham Shinde, who had a solid season with 62 tackle points, will be expected to take on a leadership position in defense now that Neeraj Kumar and Krishan are no longer on the team.
Threats:
A significant threat to the Pirates is the lack of genuine all-rounders, which could disrupt the overall balance of the team. While Gurdeep and Ankit are their most seasoned all-rounders, their combined total of two raid points in PKL history illustrates their limitations in offense.
Consequently, the raiding unit must perform exceptionally well, adding pressure to an already inexperienced attack. The three-time champions hope that the seasoned Jang Lee and Meetu Sharma can regain their form, as they have struggled in recent seasons.
