New Zealand's match-winner Melie Kerr receives exceptional recognition from a former White Ferns star, being described as a "once-in-a-generation player."
New Delhi [India], October 21: Melie Kerr, the 'Player of the Tournament' at the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024, received high praise from former New Zealand wicket-keeper Katey Martin after her remarkable performance in the prestigious event.
New Zealand clinched their first Women's T20 World Cup title by defeating South Africa in a stunning match in Dubai on Sunday, securing a convincing 32-run victory.
Kerr showcased her all-round capabilities by scoring 43 runs and taking three crucial wickets, which disrupted South Africa's efforts in the final.
The 24-year-old emerged as the tournament's leading wicket-taker, claiming 15 wickets across six matches with her leg spin, setting a record for the most wickets by a bowler in a single edition of the tournament, while also accumulating 135 runs.
Martin, who closely followed Kerr’s outstanding contributions throughout the tournament, noted that the young player had aimed high for herself leading up to the event.Â
"One little secret is that was a goal of hers, to be the Player of the Tournament, and she's done that. She's set the bar so high in what she wants to do for herself but also for the country," Martin shared on the ICC's Digital Daily show.
At just 24, Kerr has achieved several significant milestones, including being the youngest double-centurion in international cricket.
As Kerr continues to impress on the global stage, Martin believes even greater accolades await her.
"Look, she's a once-in-a-generation player. I've said it year-on-year, she'll be the future New Zealand captain, and to perform like that, I think it just shows so much character," Martin stated.
"These players have dreamed about this since they were kids—Melie Kerr, Suzie Bates, Sophie Devine—they’ve all aspired to this moment. I think they'll be in disbelief; half of them were out on the field with cramps. They’ve given everything on the field, and there’s so much pride in this group of players," Martin remarked.
