Gujarat takes the lead as India establishes ambitious renewable energy goals.

Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], September 21: Gujarat has emerged as a leader in renewable energy as it pursues a greener, more sustainable future.

Focusing strategically on solar power, the state is significantly contributing to India’s ambitious goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, with its extensive solar initiatives setting a benchmark for the nation.

The state is leveraging its geographical advantages by installing solar panels on government buildings and homes, along with developing large solar parks. 

Jai Prakash Shivahare, MD of Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd., stated, "Gujarat currently has an overall installed capacity of over 28 gigawatts in renewables, with about 14.5 gigawatts coming from solar. We rank first in solar rooftop installations in the country, accounting for over 50 percent of residential solar rooftops. Our DISCOMs provide strong support to promote residential solar. Moreover, there is significant potential in our state."

He added, "Under the RE policy 2023, Gujarat aims to install 100 GW of renewable energy by 2030, contributing significantly to the PM’s vision of 500 GW."

The Charanka Solar Park in Patan district, spanning over 5,000 acres, stands as a monumental achievement, boasting a capacity of over 600 MW. Once a barren area, it has transformed Gujarat into a leader in solar production and set a precedent for public-private partnerships, creating job opportunities.

Dhruv Patel, a worker at Charanka Solar Park, shared, "Charanka is Asia's number one solar plant. It has created jobs and transformed the barren land. The energy generated here benefits our village and city and connects to both the Gujarat and Indian grids."

Gujarat is also exploring hybrid renewable energy projects, integrating wind and solar power for enhanced efficiency and reliability.

The state’s Integrated Renewable Energy Policy of 2023 offers a stable framework for investors, including land allotment policies, demand-based connectivity, and off-taker guarantees to support renewable energy initiatives.

Shivahare explained, "The RE policy also includes offshore wind and emerging technologies. We offer off-taker guarantees to third-party and captive users, which helps ensure project viability and facilitates financing. This overall ecosystem strengthens Gujarat’s leadership in renewables."

During the 4th Global Renewable Energy Investors Meet and Expo in Gandhinagar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged Gujarat's role in renewable energy and met beneficiaries of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a scheme that encourages rooftop solar adoption as a sustainable investment.

Gujarat's leadership in renewable energy serves as a model for other states. As India aims for its ambitious renewable energy targets, Gujarat’s efforts highlight how states can significantly drive sustainable development and a greener future.
