Mumbai: Youth Congress leaders are calling for an apology from Prime Minister Modi following the collapse of the Shivaji statue
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], August 30: Youth Congress leaders and party workers were detained by Mumbai police on Friday during a protest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the city, demanding an apology for the collapse of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue.
Congress activists put up posters across various locations, showing the Prime Minister inaugurating the statue alongside images of the collapsed monument.
On Thursday, Maharashtra's Chief Minister announced swift action to reconstruct the statue and the formation of two committees to investigate the collapse in the Malvan area.
The Mumbai Congress alleged that senior party leader Bhai Jagtap was detained by police during a peaceful demonstration against Modi, calling it an abuse of power. They also claimed that MLA Aslam Shaikh was arrested.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar visited the collapse site, expressing collective sorrow and confirming that efforts are underway to rebuild the memorial. He assured that action would be taken against those responsible.
Earlier, Chetan Patil, the structural consultant for the statue, was arrested in Kolhapur. The statue, unveiled on December 4 last year during Navy Day celebrations, was intended to honor the Maratha Navy and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s maritime legacy.
