New Zealand's T20I captain Sophie Devine is expected to step down from her role following the upcoming World Cup

Wellington [New Zealand], August 30: Sophie Devine will step down as New Zealand's T20I captain following the Women's T20 World Cup in the UAE. 

Having led the White Ferns in 56 T20Is, Devine will remain part of the team as a player. She explained that stepping down will help reduce her workload and allow her to focus on playing and mentoring future leaders.

"I'm very proud to have captained the White Ferns in both formats," Devine said. "The additional workload of captaincy, while rewarding, can be challenging. By stepping away from T20 captaincy, I can concentrate more on my playing role and help nurture future leaders."

Though stepping down from T20I captaincy, Devine, 34, confirmed her intention to continue as New Zealand's ODI captain. She aims to secure the Women's ODI World Cup trophy in India next year.

New Zealand head coach Ben Swayer praised Devine’s leadership, stating, "Soph is the epitome of a fearless leader. Her experience and leadership have been invaluable as we’ve integrated young players into the team."

Devine is currently recovering from a foot injury ahead of New Zealand’s T20I series against Australia, starting September 19 in Queensland. The series will be crucial for both teams as they prepare for the World Cup in October. New Zealand has not yet announced Devine’s successor.
