Shivraj Singh Chouhan states that India's agricultural development has consistently ranked highest in the world.
New Delhi [India], August 3 (ANI): Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlighted the advancements in India's agricultural sector during the 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE), held on Saturday in New Delhi.
Chouhan stated, "Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India’s agricultural development has been unparalleled globally. While we have focused on increasing production, we have also been vigilant about ensuring that this production is both safe for human health and beneficial for soil health."
He acknowledged the significant strides made in enhancing production but emphasized the importance of safeguarding both human health and soil integrity. Chouhan pointed out the detrimental effects of excessive chemical fertilizer use, which has led to deteriorating soil health and potential risks to human health.
He added, "Our Prime Minister is deeply concerned about the negative impacts of excessive chemical fertilizers on human health and soil quality. Consequently, India is now prioritizing natural farming methods. We must address hunger and malnutrition, combat climate change threats, and tackle the issue of declining production due to rising temperatures. It is essential to consider the well-being of future generations."
Professor Ramesh Chandra of NITI Aayog provided an overview of India's achievements in agriculture. He noted that the sector has been a major focus, achieving a historically high growth rate of 5 percent over a seven-year period from 2016-17 to 2022-23.
Chandra remarked, "Agriculture has been a focal point in India, achieving a record high growth rate of 5 percent during the 7-year period from 2016-17 to 2022-23. World Bank data indicates that India achieved the highest growth rate in GDP Agriculture globally over the past decade."
Professor Matin Qaim, President of ICAE 2024, President-elect of the International Association of Agricultural Economists, and Director of the Centre for Research, emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to agricultural challenges.
"We need robust science, effective technologies, political will, societal openness to change, and international collaboration," Qaim said.
The 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE), inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gathered leading agricultural experts from around the world to address critical issues and discuss future directions for the industry.
