The Rajya Sabha commemorated the 81st anniversary of the 'Quit India Movement' with a tribute.
New Delhi [India], August 9: Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar paid tribute to freedom fighters on the 81st anniversary of the historic 'Quit India Movement' on Friday.
This significant campaign against British rule was launched on this day in 1942, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s "Do or die" speech at the Bombay session of the Congress on August 8.
The British government, alarmed by the movement, arrested the top Congress leaders, but the people supported Gandhi’s call.
In his statement to the Upper House, Dhankhar urged members to reaffirm their commitment to uphold sovereignty and integrity and to rededicate themselves to serving Bharat.
He described the occasion as a moment for Parliament members to reflect on their moral contributions and to renew their dedication to serving the nation, fulfilling the people's aspirations, and securing Bharat’s esteemed place among nations.
Dhankhar noted that the call for 'Quit India' remains relevant today during Amrit Kaal, highlighting the movement as a testament to what people can achieve when united by a common cause with determination.
He praised Gandhi’s 'Do or Die' call for energizing the masses, which ultimately led to India's independence from colonial rule.
In his statement, Dhankhar also acknowledged the post-independence efforts to reduce poverty, increase literacy, eliminate discrimination, and promote social inclusivity, expressing pride in the progress made as the nation approaches its centenary in 2047.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to those who participated in the 'Quit India Movement' under Gandhi’s leadership, emphasizing the movement’s crucial role in India’s fight for independence.Â
"Homage to all those who took part in the Quit India Movement under Bapu's leadership. It was truly a watershed moment in our freedom struggle," PM Modi posted on X.
