The United States extends its congratulations to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on his inauguration.
Washington DC [US], October 21: The United States congratulated Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on his inauguration, emphasizing that his election reflects the shared values of democracy and the rule of law that unite both nations.
In an official statement, US Secretary of State Anthony J. Blinken expressed anticipation for establishing a solid foundation with President Subianto.Â
"We look forward to building on this strong foundation with President Subianto, his government, civil society, and the Indonesian people as we celebrate 75 years of partnership between our two nations this year," Blinken stated.
He added, "Our mutual commitment to human rights, diversity, and prosperity is crucial to preserving a free and open Indo-Pacific region and world. We look forward to deepening our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and furthering the opportunities it has created for our peoples."
Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia's former defense minister, was sworn in as the eighth President of Indonesia on Sunday. He was accompanied by Gibran Rakabuming, the son of former President Joko Widodo, who was elected as Vice President.
At around 10:30 a.m. local time, Prabowo, 73, and Gibran, 37, took their oaths during a ceremony held at the Nusantara Building in the Senayan legislative complex in Jakarta.
Dignitaries from 33 countries, including India, attended the inauguration ceremony, as reported by the Antara news agency.Â
India was represented by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita.Â
This year is particularly significant as both nations commemorate 75 years of diplomatic relations and celebrate a decade of India's 'Act East' policy, of which Indonesia is a crucial component.
The External Affairs Ministry noted that Margherita's presence at the inauguration ceremony reaffirms India's commitment to enhancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Indonesia.
Prabowo secured the Presidential election victory with 59 percent of the votes in the polls held on February 14 earlier this year.
