The US has called for the establishment of a democratic interim government in Bangladesh amid the ongoing political turmoil.
Washington DC [US], August 7: The White House is closely monitoring the unfolding political situation in Bangladesh and is advocating for the formation of a democratic and inclusive interim government. In a press briefing, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre praised the army for its restraint and urged all parties to avoid further violence and work towards restoring peace.
"We're monitoring the situation in Bangladesh very closely. We have long called for the respect of democratic rights in Bangladesh, and we urge that the interim government formation be democratic and inclusive," Jean-Pierre said.
She also expressed concern over recent reports of casualties and injuries, offering condolences to those affected. The US emphasized the need for a thorough and credible investigation into all attacks and called for accountability from the new government.
"We express our deep concern and sadness about the reports of casualties and injuries over the weekend and in recent weeks. We extend our deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones and those who are suffering," Jean-Pierre added. "It will be vital for the new government to carefully and credibly investigate all attacks and ensure accountability."
The political landscape in Bangladesh remains volatile following Sheikh Hasina's resignation amid widespread protests. These demonstrations, initially driven by students seeking an end to the quota system for government jobs, have expanded into broader anti-government protests.
In Dhaka, celebrations and protests have led to significant unrest. Protesters have reportedly entered the Ganabhaban, the Prime Minister’s residence, and have been seen taking items from public buildings, including the Parliament.
The leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Dhaka have suggested Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus as the head of an interim government to address the country’s challenges. Sheikh Hasina, who resigned and departed Bangladesh, arrived in India on Monday evening. It remains uncertain whether she will stay in Delhi or relocate to another destination.
